Brownsville Plastic Bag Ban in Effect

Day one in the books for the big ban on plastic; Wednesday marked the start of what is expected to be a cleaner Brownsville.

City commissioners gave the boot to the bags in 2009, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that the ban officially went into effect. The city worked throughout 2010 to figure out how to make a smooth transition from, what often turns into unsightly litter, to these earth friendly reusable shopping bags.

“The ordinance as it is right now doesn’t mean it cannot be fine tuned as we learn more about how it’s going to impact us.” said Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada.
