Radioactive waste fueling debate
Commission to vote in January on allowing more states to dump at a site in West Texas.

Radioactive waste from more than 30 states could be destined for West Texas if a rule change by the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission is approved in January.
The public has until Sunday to offer its input.
At the heart of the matter is whether land in Andrews County should become a storage site for low-level nuclear waste from 36 states besides Texas and Vermont, which formed a compact in 1998.
Those in favor of the rule change argue that taking waste from other states always has been part of the compact’s plan and would make use of the dump cheaper for Texas and Vermont.
“The proposed rules merely establish procedures,” said Michael Ford, chairman of the commission, which has eight members — two from Vermont and six from Texas.
