San Antonio set to add recycling at apartments

The City Council today is expected to approve an ordinance requiring all apartment complexes to begin recycling programs by April 1, 2012.

The ordinance would require that recycling collection be “as convenient and as accessible as garbage collection services,” meaning recycling bins must be placed in each area where trash is collected.

The city handles solid waste collection and recycling for its 340,000 single-family homes, but multifamily complexes and businesses hire private haulers to handle their waste.

Now, trying to reach goals in a 10-year plan aimed at greatly reducing San Antonio’s waste production, the council has signaled a need for increased recycling by both apartment complexes and businesses.
